...A CALL TO ACTION FROM MAYOR KIP WALBY:
As you know, the spring rains are increasing the current water levels of Lake St. Clair and the canals resulting in flooding throughout the City. The Army Corps of Engineers predicts lake levels will continue to increase by as much as 8 inches. As lake levels continue to rise and threaten our homes and businesses, we ask for your help in volunteering to fill sandbags. They are available to City residents and business owners to help prevent flood damage to their property. However, many residents are physically unable to fill their own sandbags and need our help. The Sandbag Brigade, made up of volunteers like YOU, was created to help them protect their homes. To become a member of the Sandbag Brigade call 586-445-5350 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
To sign up for the Sandbag Brigade…
- All ages and groups/association welcome (boy/girl scouts, sports groups, etc.)
- Wear appropriate clothing including close-toed shoes
- Commit to one or more volunteer work options:
Fill sandbags…must be able to lift 25-50 pounds
Deliver sandbags to residents…must have a truck or SUV
Build a sandbag barrier on resident’s property…must be able to lift 25-50 pounds
- Bring a shovel if you have one
- Refrain from bringing small children to the sandbagging site
Working together as a community, we can proactively reduce our vulnerability and keep our City safe.
